Taking a risk

‘and putting your big girl pants on…’

Art is a risky business. Not physically but emotionally you put yourself out there every day to be judged, and that can be tough. It’s something that I found hard when I was young emerging artist and can still feel risky now. Laying your soul bare in every essay and critique at art college and then ultimately tossed out to be judged by other artists, galleries and the public. It takes resilience to tough it out in the art world, and let’s face it, whatever it is you do for work or fun, we all have bad days when nothing seems to come together.

But the rewards from taking the risk and putting yourself out there are huge. As a returner to the Art world, it felt pretty daunting to be showing myself and my work to the public in my first exhibition in a very long time. But as part of the Bridge House Arts  group show at An Talla Solais in Ullapool, there was so much love and support around, help with choosing which works to show, help with hanging, pricing, marketing and more.  And the rewards, a wall full of great looking art, which (and I’m still amazed and grateful at this bit) people wanted to hand over money for and take home to look at every day!
